It’s been almost three years since the old guard premiered on Netflix. Production wrapped at the end of 2022, and the film is gearing up for a 2023 release. Here’s everything we know about the old guard 2, also called The Old Guard Chapter Two: Strength Multiplied.
Headed by Charlize Theron, the old guard is the superhero movie in which he plays Andy, an immortal warrior who has influenced history for centuries. It is based on the comic series by Greg Rucka.
Having been in priority development for quite some time, we finally have an update on the future of the film. So here’s what we know about the old guard 2 with Skydance Media, Denver and Delilah Films and Marc Evans Productions producing for Netflix.

when it was the old guard 2 green light on Netflix?
We first reported that Netflix was eyeing a sequel back in January 2021, though confirmation wouldn’t officially come until August of that year (although Theron did officially confirm the movie back in June).
As mentioned, the old guard topped the Netflix charts in 2020 and was originally envisioned as a trilogy with the director of the first film saying:
“I know that Greg Rucka, who wrote the graphic novel in the script, always envisioned this as a trilogy. I know where the story is going, and it’s pretty good. So if the audience is looking forward to it, there are definitely more stories to tell.»
Theron confirmed it talking about the sequel to Marc Malkin of Varietysaying that the script had already been completed and that Marwan Kenzari and luca marinelli I would go back too.
Netflix would only go on to announce the sequel via its official social media sites stated on August 26:
«It’s official: The Old Guard is reuniting for a sequel to be directed by Victoria Mahoney!»

New and returning cast from The Old Guard 2
Along with the sequel announcement came confirmation that several key faces from the first film would be returning, including:
- Charlize Theron as Andy
- Kiki Layne as Nile
- Matthias Schoenaerts as Booker
- Luca Marinelli as Nicky
- Marwan Kenzari as Yusuf Alkaysani Joe
- Veronica Ngo as Quynh
- Chiwetel Ejiofor as Copley

Before filming began, Theron spoke to THR and revealed that she would be wearing a new hairstyle for the sequel, which will be dark as before, but more mullet-like this time around. When asked about the hairstyle, he said:
«We needed something that felt like time had passed, so for that, you go with the old mullet,»

On June 10, we were among the first to announce that Netflix had hired two big named stars for the sequel.
we are referring to Uma Thurman, who will play a role yet to be announced. The Oscar-nominated actress is best known for kill bill, pulp Fiction, and batman and robin. Also starred on Netflix cameras.
The second cast member added was golden henrybest known for crazy rich asians, The Knightsand the Netflix movie, Persuasion.
He old guard 2 will change directors and composers
Gina Prince-Bythewood directed the first film but will not return for the sequel, though she will remain a producer. She told Deadline in August 2021: «I love the old guard and the story and the characters that I had the honor of putting into the world. It was exciting to disrupt the genre,” adding, “I have decided not to direct the sequel, but I will stay on as a producer. I am leaving our franchise in good hands as my girl Vic Mahoney takes on this next chapter.»
Instead, the director’s chair will be handed over to Victoria Mahoney, who helped on the Star Wars franchise.

On the music front, film music reporter announced in January 2023 that max aruj and ruth barrett would be marking the next Netflix movie, notably replacing Volker Bertelmann and Dustin O’Halloran.

The second movie is set to adapt book two of the comic book series called «Force Multiplied.»

CBR wrote an excellent summary as to what happened in the comic (it’s unclear how closely Netflix’s sequel will follow the comic), with their overview stating:
“The Old Guard: Force Multiplied brings to an end the high-octane war between Andromache of Scythia and his former lover, Noriko. Andy’s immortals were being hunted as part of a long-term game by Noriko, embittered after she resurfaced from the depths of the ocean.»
An official synopsis gives us a broad overview of what we can expect from the sequel:
Andromache of Scythia and his band of soldiers are back in this second story that chronicles the battles and the burdens of their dubious immortality. Nile’s addition to the team has given them a new purpose and direction, but when you have 6,000 years of history behind you, the past is always ready to return, with a vengeance.»
Where is the old guard 2 in production?
The previously mentioned Variety article stated: «Cameras will start rolling in the first quarter of 2022.» However, that did not come to fruition.
We’ve heard that the movie has been in pre-production for much of 2022 and that cameras will start rolling in June 2022.
That was confirmed on June 13 with Victoria Mahoney tweeting a photo with the caption «Day 1.»

The sequel will be filmed predominantly in Rome, Italy, and will be called DEVON HOUSE. Other production sources claim that some of the sequels will be filmed in the UK (where part of the first film was also filmed).
filming wrapped, according to KFTVin Rome at the end of September 2023, with Henry Golding posting on Instagram:
“Rome, you were wonderful… But it’s time to say Ciao! The Old Guard 2 is going to be a hit, I can’t wait for you to see it.»
When the old guard 2 Will it premiere on Netflix?
No official release date has been released for The Old Guard 2, though in the Netflix Upfronts in May 2023the film was included in the list of films of 2023.
Our best guess is that it will be among the fall 2023 lineup, but watch this space.
On the other hand, Charlize Theron is also expected to reprise her role as Lorraine Broughton in a Atomic Blonde continuation Directed exclusively to Netflix. Theron is also attached to produce a Denver and Delilah Productions sports drama film about the battle of four women competing in a big wave surfing competition.
