Tropical storm Polo became a category 1 hurricane on Wednesday night as Saffir-Simpson escalated over the waters of the Mexican Pacific.

The intense rains made themselves felt in the tourist peninsula of Baja California, which a few days ago was devastated by the powerful Hurricane Odile.

Polo presents maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 150. By 10:00 p.m. the phenomenon was located about 290 kilometers south of Manzanillo, in the state of Colima, according to the National Meteorological Service.

The new alert zone established by the agency goes from Punta San Telmo, Michoacán, to Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco.
