A thunderous explosion heard in the Washington metropolitan area on Sunday afternoon was a sonic boom from a Defense Department aircraft, according to authorities.

Nervous residents took to Twitter to report hearing some sort of explosion in the area around 3 p.m. Sunday.

«There is no threat at this time,» the D.C. Homeland Security and Emergency Administration said in a cheep regarding loud noise.

Annapolis police say the cause of the noise in the DMV area was a licensed Department of Defense aircraft.

Officials say the plane caused a sonic boom afterwards.

Local police departments, including the Metropolitan Police Department and the Bowie Police Department in Maryland, said they had dispatched units to neighborhoods in the area and were unable to find any other source for the sound of the explosion.
