Police shot and killed an assailant in a shootout after he shot a person inside an Indiana Walmart on Thursday, an Evansville police spokesman said.

The victim, who was shot at a Walmart in Evansville, southern Indiana, just before 10 p.m., was alive when deputies arrived. Police Sgt. Anna Gray did not disclose the condition of the victim at a subsequent briefing for journalists.

The officers killed the shooter, who fired multiple shots at the officers, he said. He was only identified as male.

“He was shooting at officers and moving” inside the store, he said. «It was not contained in a single indoor area.»

Police cleared the building, but people fled the Walmart and police weren’t immediately sure if anyone else was hurt.

Gray said police don’t know if the shooting was targeted or random. Investigators are trying to interview witnesses. She didn’t know what type of weapon the shooter used.

Walmart said it would support its employees in the aftermath of the shooting and thanked first responders.

“The entire Walmart family is shocked by the senseless violence that occurred at our Evansville store, and our hearts go out to our associate at this time,” the company said.

The company and police did not immediately say whether the shooter was an employee, a customer or someone else. The victim was not identified and police did not say if he was a worker or a customer.

Police said the call about a shooting at the store came in at 9:59 p.m. local time (10:59 p.m. ET).

Evansville is a city of about 117,000 people in southern Indiana, near the Kentucky border.
