The Arizona Coyotes dumped another major player before the NHL’s trade deadline, sending defenseman Jakob Chychrun to the Ottawa Senators.
Ottawa is sending a 2023 first-round draft pick, a 2024 conditional second-round pick and a 2026 second-round pick to Arizona.
«On behalf of the entire organization, I’d like to thank Jakob for everything he’s done for the Coyotes on and off the ice over the past seven seasons,» general manager Bill Armstrong said.
«Jakob is a great person, a true professional and a class act, and we wish him all the best in the future.»

The Senators are trying to make a playoff push. They’re in sixth place in the Atlantic Division at 30-26-4, and the 24-year-old Chychrun is a good piece to shore up the back end of him.
Chychrun is no stranger to trade rumors, and they’ve been swirling around him for over a year as Arizona continues to struggle. He has been a bright spot on the team that selected him 16th overall in the 2016 NHL Draft.

Going into full rebuild mode with Arizona trading defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere early Wednesday, the Senators jumped at the chance to land a young talent who won’t become a free agent until 2025.
«A defenseman we’ve coveted, Jakob is big and plays impressive,» Senators general manager Pierre Dorion said in a statement. «He has a quality skill set; he defends tough and is very skilled. He uses his heavy shot with precision and is effective in creating offense as a threat on the offensive blue line.»
KINGS TRADIE JONATHAN QUICK, WHO LEED THE TEAM TO TWO STANLEY CUP TITLES, TO BLUE JACKETS: REPORTS
At 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds, Chychrun has a quintessential defensive build and uses it to his advantage near the backboards and around his net. While the Coyotes haven’t fared well, he is plus-8 in 36 games with seven goals and 21 assists this season.
Chychrun will likely be paired with Ottawa’s Jake Sanderson, while Thomas Chabot and Artem Zub will remain as the top defensive line.

That could change quickly depending on how Chychrun gets acclimated to the team.
