Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are making a bold and very public bid to bring Gareth Bale out of retirement to play a season at Wrexham.

Bale, a Welsh great who retired after the World Cup at 33, congratulated Wrexham’s celebrity owners following the team’s promotion to the fourth tier of English soccer at the weekend.

In response to Bale’s video message, McElhenney wrote on Twitter: «Hey Gareth Bale let’s play some golf where I won’t spend 4 hours trying to talk you out of retiring for one last magical season.»

Bale, a passionate golfer in his spare time, replied «It depends on which course…». He also tagged in the R&A, which organizes the British Open from its base in the birthplace of golf in St. Andrews, Scotland.

Reynolds weighed in on Wednesday, tweeting: «I’ll shave a pro-level golf course off Rob’s back if you give Wrexham a season.»

Bale’s search seems like a long shot, given that he is three months out of retirement, has never played at such a low level of football and would likely command a huge salary. He, too, was born in Cardiff, in south Wales, while Wrexham is based in the north of the principality.

However, McElhenney and Reynolds are dreamers. Just look at what they’re doing at Wrexham, a club on its knees before the A-listers takeover in 2021.
