Rookie phenom Corbin Carroll turns strikeout into bewildering run for Diamondbacks vs. Braves

The Arizona Diamondbacks rookie outfielder has had a breakout 2023 season for a team that has benefited from his All-Star level of play.

Once the top prospect in the organization, the D-Backs expected Carroll to quickly catch on with the big boys, and he has done so with his solid bat, advanced fielding game and arguably his greatest asset, his speed.

That was on display Tuesday night in Atlanta as the Diamondbacks, who are hoping to return to the top of the NL West after being swept by the Toronto Blue Jays early in the second half, faced the Braves.

In the bottom of the first inning, Carroll crushed an RBI triple off fellow National League All-Star Bryce Elder, creating an early lead for Arizona. Next inning, Carroll was back at the plate, but he wasn’t as lucky, striking out on a pitch from Elder that found dirt just behind home plate.

But despite the strikeout, Carroll ended up at third base because his speed caused a serious error by Braves catcher Sean Murphy.

Murphy got up to receive the ball. Knowing that Carroll possessed elite speed out of the left-handed batter’s box, Murphy appeared to rush his throw to first baseman Matt Olson, who couldn’t make the play.

Carroll saw the ball slide into the outfield and punted in second gear. He tore it around the bases and eventually ended up at third base when teammate Ketel Marte scored from second base.

The run made it a 6-5 game, as the score just started for this game.

Arizona ultimately won the game, 16-13, to snap their four-game skid that started with a loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates just before the All-Star break.

Carroll finished the game 2-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs as the 22-year-old continues to rack up his breakout season.

Carroll owns a slash line of .286/.354/.538 with 18 home runs and 50 RBIs in 90 games. He earned the first All-Star nomination of his career this season, and the D-Backs don’t expect that to stop in future seasons.
