The category is: Republican drag queen reality.

As the centuries-old drag art form has assumed a surprisingly central role in the modern American culture war, a drag-loving couple decided to take a creative approach to their activism: a parody Instagram account dedicated to AI-generated portraits. . of transvestite republican leaders.

“We’re huge fans of drag, and we witnessed the anti-drag rhetoric and action from the Republican Party, and we wanted to do something about it, so we said, ‘Let’s put the Republican Party in the world of drag,’” Craig said, who created the RuPublicanos Instagram account with her husband, Stephen. The men asked that her last name not be published due to concerns for her personal safety.

The name of the account, which launched on March 30 and now has more than 95,000 followers, is a nod to «RuPaul’s Drag Race,» the popular drag competition show. The RuPublicans account has posted portraits of 11 conservative heavyweights thus far, each with their own distinctive style and, of course, a drag name. And while it may seem like each of these men had their own glam gear on hand, the images were created exclusively by Craig, Stephen, and an artificial intelligence text-to-image program called Midjourney.

“Everything is generated without a photo that we input,” Craig said. “I provide cues as to what I want to see in the photo: what’s in the background, what the person is wearing, how they feel, like they get to that level of specificity, and then they spit out images, and you don’t. You always get what you want and sometimes the AI generator gives you something you could never have imagined that just blows your mind and you like to keep going.”

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who made national headlines last year by signing his state’s so-called Don’t Say Gay bill and engaging in a standoff with the CEO of Walt Disney Co., is among the Republicans. who received an AI drag makeover. Her drag alter ego «Rhonda Santy» is shown in a trio of images, including one of her portraying her as an evil stepmother with Disney’s Magical Kingdom in the background.

“Rhonda Santy — Category is: Princess Eleganza Book Ban. She’s on a mission to turn that Magical Kingdom into a Tragic Kingdom and she’s not afraid to show Mickey the finger(s),» the caption for DeSantis’ parody images reads.

Senator Ted Cruz of Texas is portrayed as “Cruzella Deville” in five portraits, including the conservative lawmaker with a full face of makeup, a blonde or pink wig, and stunning gowns.

“Cruzella Deville: Serving homophobic reality, strutting around in fur coats lined with family values and defending every fetus and every gun,” reads the caption about the reimagining of Cruz, who recently said the Supreme Court was “clearly wrong” in its 2015 Decision to legalize same-sex marriage.

Neither DeSantis nor Cruz immediately responded to requests for comment.

Rudy Giuliani (“Rudy Garland”), Lindsey Graham (“Lady Graham Cracker”) and Mike Pence (“Mother Pence”) are among other political figures who have been reimagined as drag queens on the RuPublicans account.

While Craig and Stephen called their RuPublicans project «pure fantasy,» they said they hope it can also serve as a platform for activism.

“We want it to serve as a platform for a message and show that drag really isn’t that scary,” Stephen said. “It makes you laugh and it makes you think, and this isn’t just for us and gay people. I hope a lot of Republicans see this and can laugh at themselves too.»

So far this year, Republican lawmakers in more than a dozen states have proposed bills to restrict drag performances, according to an NBC News analysis. Tennessee is the only state to have signed such a bill.

While the photos have generated thousands of responses since the account first launched, one in particular had a huge impact on Craig and Stephen, they said. The message was from a woman whose son attends The Covenant School, a private Christian school in Nashville, where just weeks ago a mass shooting left three children and three adults dead.. The mother said she laughed for the first time in weeks when she saw the RuPublicans account.

“She had this beautiful message about how important she is, what we’re doing and how much it helped her,” Craig said. «So those are the kinds of things that fuel this and keep it going.»

«You know, there are a lot of dark times that we’re living in right now, and we just want to spread the brightness and the laughter and the lightness, but also to be really smart and soulful.» said Stephen.
