SEATTLE – A woman who was eight months pregnant has died after a man fired multiple shots at a car she was in while stopped at a downtown Seattle intersection, authorities said.

The 34-year-old woman’s baby was born at a hospital and died shortly after. The Seattle Times reported on Wednesday, citing a probable cause plea.

A 37-year-old man who was in the car with the woman was injured in the arm and remains hospitalized.

The motivation for the Tuesday morning shooting in the Belltown neighborhood was unclear.

A man approached the car, shot the driver’s side with a handgun and ran off, according to the statement. Video from the neighborhood showed no prior interaction with the victims.

Shortly thereafter, police located a 30-year-old man matching the witnesses’ description. When officers approached him, he raised his arms and said, «I did it, I did it,» according to police.

Police said they told investigators that they saw a firearm in the vehicle and reacted by shooting.

He was taken into custody and a judge found probable cause to detain him in an investigation into homicide, assault and illegal possession of a firearm, according to a spokesperson for prosecutors. He still had not been charged as of Wednesday.
