One person was killed and five others were injured in a shooting next to a popular Atlanta shopping destination Saturday night, police said.
A group of people between the ages of 15 and 21 had been escorted off the Atlantic Station outdoor mall property and were on an adjacent freeway overpass when gunshots erupted, police Lt. Atlanta police officer Germain Dearlove at a press conference.
The deceased person was found at the scene, he said, and the injured were taken to medical facilities. Their conditions were not available.
The background of a suspect or suspects is unknown. There may be two sides to the group, with two shooters exchanging fire, Germain said.
A witness told the Atlanta affiliate NBC WXIA that up to 30 rounds were heard.
The shooting took place on one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year at one of the most popular malls in the Atlanta area.
Police blocked 17th Street while they investigated the source of the attack. The adjacent Interstate 85 freeway exit lanes reopened late Saturday after being closed to accommodate investigators.
