Note: In this report of Netflix hours watched from June 26, 2023 to July 2, 2023, we will use «Full View Equivalent» or CVE, expressed in millions. That’s the same metric Netflix now uses in its Top 10 after the June 2023 methodology update. It allows for better comparisons between movies and series, but it’s not an audience metric. It is the minimum number of viewings if they were all complete from the first second to the last of the movie or season.

1. The Wizard it’s back.

The Wizard is back to slay some monsters in its third season, a season split in two as per Netflix’s new trend, and once again, it’s hard to see the silver lining in this split, as season 3 had a good launch, but it’s far from extraordinary or even Top-10 material of all time.

With 15.2 million CVEs through the first four days, this is the fifth best launch for a US series released on a Thursday.

It may be due to all the turmoil among fans over the series, Henry Cavill’s departure, or even the quality of this season. Still, it could also be because some viewers are waiting for the entire season to be released to start watching. Now, the series is already renewed for a fourth season, and Netflix is betting on it through several other projects, so let’s not worry. Still.

2. Nimona shocks and burns.

It was Netflix’s big animation move for Q2 2023 with great word of mouth, a huge marketing push, and a premiere during the prestigious Annecy Animated Film Festival, but let’s just say the gamble didn’t pay off. Nimona it crashed and burned in its opening weekend with just 3.2 million CVEs, the worst launch on record for an American animated film to break into the top 10.

Now, it’s better than other Netflix animated movies that didn’t make the Top 10 when they were released (like wendell and savage, My father’s dragon either Apollo 10 1/2), but if it weren’t for the change in methodology for Netflix’s Top 10, the film would not have charted this week.

3. through my window 2 falls hard in week 2

Last week, the sequel to the Spanish romantic comedy through my window 2 it had a good launch, but flopped completely in its second week, losing 28% of viewing time, one of the worst week 2 drops for any Netflix movie released on a Friday.

It won’t replicate the success of the first movie which is still ranked #3 on the Top 10 Most Popular International Movies of All Time and will be lucky to only do half of what the first movie did. That’s a huge miss, and a third movie is coming out soon.

4. Extraction 2 keep going strong

Yet another sequel that does very well is «Extraction 2,» which lost a decent 59% viewing time in its third week. After 14 days, it stood at an estimated 96.2 million CVEs, the seventh best launch for any Netflix movie released in the last two years.

5. Ghosts of the Abyss come back from the deep

The most outstanding title of the Top 10 this week is the documentary Ghosts of the Abyss which managed to reach #8 in the Top 10 in English being only on Netflix in Latin America. The disappearance of the OceanGate submersible is likely the reason Netflix subscribers watched the James Cameron-directed documentary in 2003.
