Welcome to your weekly roundup of the biggest stories from Netflix’s top 10 hourly figures for the week ending April 9, 2023. This week, we’ll discuss BEEF, suck, Transatlantic, the agent of the night, The gloryand murder mystery 2.

Every Tuesday, Netflix updates its Top 10 Stats page with 40 new figures per hour for the top movies and shows from the past seven days. If you want to easily browse the top 10 hourly data, visit our tool.

Note: In this report of Netflix hours watched from April 3, 2023 to April 9, 2023, we will use «Full View Equivalent» or CVE, expressed in millions. That means we divide the hours watched advertised by Netflix by the running time of the movies or series. It allows for better comparisons between movies and series, but it is not an audience metric. It is the minimum number of viewings if they were all complete from the first second to the last of the movie or season.

1. murder mystery 2 strong stay.

After his big debut last week, it was going to be interesting to see how murder mystery 2 it would hold up and it did well, losing only 7% of the hours watched. After ten days, the film has 82.8 million CVEs, the seventh-highest count among Netflix Original movies released on a Friday since mid-2021.

Murder Mystery 2 CVE – Week 2

The first murder mystery it registered 104.9 million CVEs during its first 28 days in 2019 and the sequel looks set to do better than the first. A third movie seems a sure thing if it’s not already in development.

2. suck makes a good start.

Since the beginning of the year, Netflix has made some interesting programming choices regarding its original English-language movies, combining a big title with a smaller one.

Large titles generate large numbers (65-90 million CVEs after 28 days), while smaller ones generate less (30-45 million CVEs). Until now, we had Your people and the pale blue eye in January, your place or mine and we have a ghost in February, Luther: the fallen sun and The Wizard’s Elephant in March.

for April, murder mystery 2 is the great title, and family movie suck seems to be the minor. It got off to a good start last week with 15.5 million CVEs, on track for 35 million CVEs for its 28-day run.

3. BEEF It has a mediocre start but its importance lies elsewhere.

I had doubts BEEF it would make a great release on Netflix, as it’s about as independent as it gets: an A24-produced drama series with probably no big names attached and no «hook» to its premise. It launched with 5.9 million CVEs, at the low end of launches for new US series released on a Thursday.

Now, let’s look at the bright side: at least it made it into the global Top 10, which is already better than what Month did (another A24-produced show), and which was notably renewed for a second and final season.

critical acclaim for BEEF It’s extraordinary, though, with a 99% on Rotten Tomatoes, an average of 8.4/10 on IMDB, and 86/10 on Metacritic, and it’s already one of the best new series on Netflix in quite some time.

It might also get some recognition at the upcoming Emmy Awards, where compete as a limited series. Now, the creator claims to have three seasons in mind, and that pitch may be a bit low to expect three seasons, but Netflix could also consider the series a prestige work, something that’s been lacking of late.

4. Transatlantic bombs hard.

This series had it all: World War II, the landscape of southern France, the creator of the acclaimed series Heterodox and Gillian Jacobs, but Transatlantic bombarded hard in its opening weekend with a mediocre CVE of 2.1 million, good enough to be the worst opening weekend for an English-speaking European series, just under Half-Bad: The bastard son and the devil himself.

Since it’s a limited series, it’s not at risk of being canceled by Netflix (after apparently being canceled by the public).

5. The glory and the agent of the night reach new milestones.

Two series hit the all-time charts that week and let’s start with The glory which finished its first 28-day run. Based on Netflix’s methodology for series released in two parts, it counts the hours watched for the first 28 days of Part 1 and adds the hours watched for the first 28 days of Part 2. With nearly 437 million hours watched for both parties during their respective first 28 days, The glory it is now in fifth place in the top 10 of all time for non-English series. This number means that we can now also take a look at the CVEs for the same period and this is what we found.

The Glory vs All Of Us Are Dead, Squid Game, My Name and Hellbound

With 30.9 million CVEs, The glory is the third most-watched new South Korean series in its release period, behind we are all dead and far behind squid game. Will it be renewed? Hard to say, since it was never tagged as a limited series, but its story wraps up convincingly.

Moving on to the Top 10 all-time English series, the agent of the night entered in ninth place with 515 million hours watched after a third week on the charts with a fantastic -40% retention from week 2. This excellent retention gives it a better curve than The vigilant.

It still has ten days to go up the charts, and my money is at the 600 million hour watched mark after 28 days, good enough for sixth place.
