A mother «helped facilitate» her 14-year-old daughter’s departure from foster care when the girl went missing for a year, authorities said.

the teenager was found hiding and pregnant in Michigan this week, officials said Friday. A fugitive team from US Marshals discovered the teen, reported missing on September 3, 2021, in a closet around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in Port Huron, Deputy US Marshal Robert Watson said. .

When the girl was placed in foster care in 2021, the mother’s custody rights had just ended and the state was seeking to establish custody of the girl’s father when he disappeared, Watson said.

“The mother helped ease their release from foster care,” before they “bounced” to homes in Detroit, Port Huron, Mt. Clemens and perhaps other nearby locations, Watson said.

When found this week, the girl was «visibly pregnant» and was taken to a hospital for evaluation, according to Watson.

The identity of the person who made the girl pregnant is sought. The age of consent in Michigan is 16.

“They are looking into both the parental abduction and also possible criminal sexual conduct,” said St. Clair County District Attorney Michael Wendling.

Anyone who knowingly helped the mother to illegally take her daughter could also be in legal jeopardy.

Suggestions from the public caused deputies to visit multiple homes throughout 2022, where the missing girl was likely on the other side of the door, St. Clair Sheriff Mat said the king.

«We checked countless leads and leads and on several occasions believed the minor was in a residence but were denied access because we did not have enough information for a search warrant,» King said.

“Those subjects knew that the police were looking for a minor and did not inform us when we made contact. They knew the minor was in danger and yes, they may be investigating charges.»

The girl is now with her father in St. Clair County, authorities said.

“She is doing well physically, she is safe and healthy at this time,” the sheriff said.
