The Mexican authorities confirmed that the airlift has already begun to evacuate some 30,000 tourists who are stranded in the state of Baja California Sur due to the havoc caused by Hurricane Odile.
The airlift, in which transport ships of the Mexican army and commercial airplanes participate, is carried out from two airports. It is estimated that at least 26,000 of the tourists are foreigners. Many are in hotels or in one of the 164 reservations authorized by the government.
Odile, which was downgraded to a tropical storm Monday night, made landfall in the state of Baja California Sur Sunday night as a Category 3 hurricane.
In its wake it has caused roadblocks, floods and severe power outages, with almost 300,000 people without electricity service. The most affected city is San José de los Cabos
However, so far no fatalities or serious injuries have been reported. It is indicated that this Tuesday Odine is moving through a desert area not very populated. Heavy rains are expected in the coming days.
holiday
Juan Carlos Pérez Salazar, BBC correspondent in Mexico, pointed out that all this occurs during the longest holiday of the year in Mexico, when the festival of the Cry of Independence is celebrated.
The correspondent recalled that exactly one year ago the country was hit simultaneously, by the Pacific and the Atlantic, by hurricanes Manuel and Ingrid, which left at least 123 dead, dozens missing and multimillion-dollar losses.
It is expected that on Tuesday afternoon, after the military parades for the national holidays, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto will visit the affected areas.
