Longtime Boston sports radio host Fred Toucher has revealed he’s having throat surgery, and it comes after some help from a listener.

Toucher, the co-host of «Toucher & Rich» with Rich Shertenlieb on 98.5 The Sports Hub, announced Friday that he has been battling voice problems in recent months and needs throat surgery after being consulted by a specific doctor whom one of his listeners suggested he go.

Shertenlieb read a statement on the air Monday morning that Toucher prepared to explain his situation to listeners.

«My voice has been in bad shape for a long time,» the statement said. «I had been going to doctors and they didn’t seem too concerned. However, a listener overheard me and put me in touch with a doctor he works with. I went and things didn’t go well. He found some things in my throat that worried him. He told me not to worry because he could fix everything. I don’t want to sound dramatic, but a listener may have saved my life by making that appointment.»

«For that, I’m grateful, even though the doctor won’t take insurance. Between this and my divorce, I’m f—ed financially! Sorry kids, Christmas will be a lot different this year.»

«Toucher & Rich» has done very well over the years in the Boston sports radio market, dominating the morning rush with a 23.4 rating in the fall among the male 25-54 demographic. years, according to the Boston Globe.

The main competitor to «Toucher & Rich» is «The Greg Hill Show,» which earned a 10.9 rating in the same time period.

«If you stay long enough, there will be difficult times,» the statement added. «Rich has had them, the guys behind the scenes have had them and here I go again with mine. It’s been my pleasure to share my journey over the last 17 years with you. My shit, it would be worth it someday.»

Toucher said Friday that he is not allowed to speak at this time. However, his days behind the microphone don’t end forever.

«I’ll be back. That’s for sure. In the meantime, your mornings will be a little happier and less fat. I’m going to write a bunch of stuff for the website. So you’ll know what’s up with me.» if you choose to care,» the statement read.

The 48-year-old began his radio career in Cummings, Georgia, after attending Rollins College. After one season in Atlanta, Toucher moved to WBCN Boston to begin working with Shertenlieb.

Toucher said Friday that he is not allowed to speak at this time.  However, his days behind the microphone don't end forever.
