KANSAS CITY, Kan. — One or more shooters opened fire on a child playing in the front yard of a Kansas home, killing him, authorities said.

The attack Wednesday night in Kansas City, Kansas, while it was still daylight, does not appear to have been a «random act,» Police Major Violeta Magee told reporters at the scene. Police did not release the boy’s name or age, but described him as a «young minor.»

Officers found the injured boy in the front yard. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Magee said.

Police found more than 30 bullet casings at the scene. They are looking at a maroon Subaru Legacy that is missing a front bumper which may be related to the attack.

Police have not said whether they believe more than one person was involved in the attack, or whether the intended target was the child or the adult he was with. Police did not immediately respond to phone and email messages seeking additional information Thursday.
