The ‘TV3 Marathon’ receives recognition for its «unique formula of scientific patronage»
The Economist Jaume Venturafrom the Center for Research in International Economics (CREI), and virologist Júlia Vergara-Alertof the Center for Research in Animal Health (IRTA-CReSA), have been awarded the 2023 National Research Awards. As announced this Wednesday by the Minister of Research and Universities, Joaquim Nadal i Farreras, the work of these scientists Catalans stands out both for its academic impact and for its international repercussion.
Ventura (Barcelona, 1963) has been one of the pioneers of the research in macroeconomics and international economics. His work in this field has become an indispensable academic reference for doctoral programs around the world. One of his most notable achievements includes the creation of a dynamic model on international trade.
Vergara-Alert (Olesa de Montserrat, 1984) has dedicated his life to respiratory virus study. The researcher is an expert in coronaviruses of animal origin that have ‘jumped’ to humans, such as the porcine epidemic diarrheaMiddle East respiratory syndrome (MERS-CoC) and, more recently, in the pathogen responsible for covid-19 (SARS-CoV-2). His studies on the virus responsible for the pandemic have achieved mobilize more than 3.5 million euros for investigations.
With the delivery of these awards, promoted in collaboration with the Fundació Catalana per a la Recerca i la Innovació (FCRI), Catalonia distinguishes the trajectory of these researchers and grants them a financial endowment of 40,000 euros.

This year’s awards also include, in the category of scientific communication, the role of ‘The TV3 Marathon’ for its «unique scientific patronage formula» and for becoming a «citizen mobilization tool». In this same line, the BBVA Foundation receives an award for his «philanthropic career in financing different research centers of excellence».
The initiative’UPF-CaixaBank-Economy in real time‘, created to measure the impact of the covid-19 pandemic on social inequalities, also received an award in the category of public-private collaboration in R&D. He Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO), for its part, stands out with the Innovation award for the creation of the company ‘LuxQuanta’, a company that develops and markets distribution systems for quantum keys to encrypt the communications of public and private entities.
