At least 37 people died after a fire broke out at a migration center along the US-Mexico border, authorities said.

Many more were injured, with 21 people taken to four local hospitals, officials told Telemundo KTDO affiliate early Tuesday morning, after the fire in a compound of the National Institute of Migration (INM) in Ciudad Juárez.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known. Rescue teams, firefighters and local police responded to the scene, Telemundo reported.

The facility, in the state of Chihuahua, is near the Santa Fe International Bridge.

The country’s attorney general has launched an investigation, Ciudad Juárez federal representative Andrea Chávez said in a statement On Facebook.

Mexican authorities did not immediately respond to NBC News’ requests for comment.
