The expeditions plan to travel 24,272 nautical miles (equivalent to 39,000
kilometers) aboard the vessels ARC Gloria and ARC Simón Bolívar. Its crew will be led by Navy researchers, who will have the support of the Ecopetrol Innovation and Technology Center team.

During these scientific expeditions, the potential for clean energy generation will be analyzed, through the application of augmented reality techniques and simulation of virtual scenarios.

Likewise, technical evaluations will be carried out to measure the impact it has on the environment and maritime operations, the use of conventional and renewable marine diesel.

It will serve to transfer knowledge between the scientific teams and will contribute to the achievement of the goals set by the organization.

The data collected between Ecopetrol and the National Navy will be used in the design of initiatives to leverage the energy transition and mitigating greenhouse gases.

«This alliance allows the Ecopetrol Group to join efforts with other institutions to
develop scientific, technological and operational capabilities in the maritime field, which will serve to transfer knowledge between scientific teams and contribute to the achievement of the goals that the organization set for itself in terms of decarbonization and reduction of emissions, with the purpose of mitigating the impacts of climate change”, said Alberto Consuegra, executive vice president of Ecopetrol.

Meanwhile, the Admiral Francisco Cubides, Commander of the National Navystated that «this agreement marks a historic milestone, signaling a new journey towards energy efficiency, a vital instrument to reduce the carbon footprint of our services and processes.»

Scientific expeditions will reach Antarctica

The crossings to the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean will be covered by the ARC Gloria Training ShipColombia’s ambassador ship in the seas of the world and itinerant sample of the national culture.

Another expedition will be carried out aboard the ARC Simón Bolívar oceanographic vessel, the largest vessel that has been built with Colombian hands and minds in
national territory, for scientific research. It will sail along the Pacific until it reaches Antarctica.
