Doctors at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center said Thursday that Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin has made «substantial progress» in the last 24 hours, so much so that he was able to ask medical staff «who won?» . Monday night game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Hospital officials gave an update on Hamlin’s condition during a news conference Thursday afternoon, noting that while he still can’t speak, he has been communicating with his handwriting.

«The answer is yes, Damar, you won the game of life,» Dr. Timothy Pritts recalled telling reporters.

Dr. Pritts added that Hamlin was «beginning to wake up» on Thursday morning and that it appeared his «neurological condition and function was intact,» despite the fact that he was still «gravely ill.»
