Brazilian authorities launched an operation to arrest 43 police officers who are accused of being involved in a bribery and extortion network.

At least 24 officers have already been arrested, including the third in the hierarchy of the city’s military police, Colonel Alexandre Fontanelle Ribeiro.

Ribeiro is currently the head of special operations in Rio and leads the city’s shock forces.

In a statement, Brazil’s public prosecutors accused the agents of passing bribes from small and medium-sized businesses – such as bus companies and minibus drivers – to high-ranking police officers.
