Brandon Beane, general manager of the Bills signaled a big gap between Buffalo and Cincinnati following Sunday’s disastrous loss in the divisional round and apparently took a thinly veiled shot against the Bengals in the process.

Speaking at his year-end press conference on Tuesday, Beane was asked if he thinks there’s anything about the list of bengalis that the Bills should try to emulate in the offseason «to close that gap.»

«No, they have a good team, right now they have the advantage of a rookie quarterback contract. And they had some lean years and without getting too deep into their build, I don’t want to suck enough that I have to get Ja’Marr Chase».

Beane continued: «He’s a great talent, I’d love to have him, but you have to go through some tough years to do that and they were able to get it.» [Joe] Burrow at No. 1, and I don’t remember where Chase was drafted, pretty high up, and those guys are on their rookie contracts.»

Beane wasn’t discrediting the Bengals’ star players, but he was pointing out the obvious.

Cincinnati has had two top-five first-round picks in the past three seasons: Burrow with the No. 1 overall pick in 2020 and Chase with the No. 5 pick in 2021. By comparison, the last NFL draft pick of The Bills in the top five was Sammy Watkins in 2014 with the No. 4 overall pick.

«We’re paying Stefon Diggs quite a large amount. We’re paying Josh Allen a fairly large amount, so there are cap limitations,» Beane continued.

«But they have a very good team. They have some good young players. We’re going to try to get as many good players as we can through the draft and through free agency, but again, our situation at the cap is a little different.» .»

Beane said he plans to rework some contracts in the offseason to fill in the gaps, but cautioned they have to be smart about it.

«We may have to rework some contracts. It’s not like we’re not going to do that. But I also don’t want, in two years, to be a hundred million over the cap, like we’ve seen teams do.»
