WASHINGTON – The Biden administration is expected to announce a new round of military assistance for Ukraine on Friday that will include equipment the United States has not previously provided, three US officials said.

President Joe Biden announced Thursday that Bradley Fighting Vehicles will be part of the package. The announcement was made in conjunction with Germany, which plans to send Marder infantry fighting vehicles.

The total price tag for the package will be nearly $3 billion, two US officials said.

The president held a phone call with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Thursday afternoon, the White House said in a statement.

The two leaders «reiterated their support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence,» a White House statement said. «They reaffirmed their unwavering solidarity with Ukraine and the Ukrainian people in the face of Russian aggression.»

The aid package will be the first of $45 billion Congress authorized for Ukraine late last month.

Biden said on Wednesday that he was considering sending the powerful Bradley armored vehicles to Ukraine, which Kyiv has asked the United States to do.
