RODANTHE, NC – A house collapsed into the ocean Monday on the chain of islands off the coast of North Carolina, according to US National Park Service officials.

Authorities are warning visitors to the Cape Hatteras National Seashore on the state’s Outer Banks to beware of debris from a one-story house that collapsed along the beach and into the ocean in Rodanthe.

Most of the debris is at the site of the collapsed home along East Point Drive, and authorities said they are contacting the homeowner to coordinate removal of the home and all related debris at the site. beach.

The site of Monday’s collapse is about a mile north of Ocean Drive, where other homes collapsed last year, including two that collapsed on the same day in May.

The North Carolina coast is made up almost entirely of narrow, low-lying barrier islands. The islands are particularly vulnerable to storm surges and being washed away on either side.
