SPRINGFIELD, Colo. — A driver, who was pulled over for speeding, tried to switch places with his dog to avoid arrest, Colorado police said.

An officer saw him maneuver into the car before getting out on the passenger side Saturday night in Springfield, a city of about 1,300 people in the state’s eastern Plains, police said on Facebook Sunday.

The man said he was not behind the wheel and was clearly showing signs of being drunk, police said. He fled from the officer when he asked how much he had drunk and was caught about 20 yards away, police said.

After being taken to the hospital for checkups, the man was arrested on suspicion of charges including driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and driving while impaired, as well as previous warrants.
