Brock Purdy, the third rookie to become the Niners’ starting quarterback at midseason, suffered a major injury to his throwing arm on the first series of San Francisco’s 31-7 loss to the Eagles Sunday.

Fourth-string quarterback Josh Johnson was included in the game, but Purdy made a quick comeback in the second half after Johnson was ruled out with a concussion.

Purdy suffered a UCL tear in his right elbow that could reportedly keep him sidelined for six months.

«The minute I started throwing I literally knew something was wrong. I couldn’t throw,» Purdy said. «So obviously the adrenaline and things that I think help in terms of allowing me to get back into the game and turn the ball over. Even that was pretty painful. But overall, it sucked that I couldn’t shoot.»

Purdy won all seven of his starts before Sunday’s loss. He finished the regular season with 1,374 passing yards and 13 touchdowns while throwing just four interceptions.
